How to Choose the Right Kite
Having run CS Kites for nearly 40 years, one question I hear most is: "Which kite should I get?" The answer comes down to three key factors: age, wind conditions, and experience level.
1. Choose by Age
| Age Group | Recommended Kites |
|---|---|
| Ages 4–10 | Fishing rod kites, handheld kites — lightweight, easy to control in light wind, simple assembly |
| Ages 10+ | Delta kites, eagle kites, animal-shaped kites — stable flight, great visual appeal |
2. Choose by Wind Conditions
Light Wind (Beaufort 1–3)
Best for: children's kites, small delta kites. These are designed to fly in minimal wind — perfect for parks and open beaches.
Medium Wind (Beaufort 4–5)
Best for: eagle kites, medium delta kites, animal kites. These perform at their best in moderate wind — stable and visually impressive.
Strong Wind (Beaufort 6+)
Best for: large kites, stunt kites. These require strong winds and more experience — not recommended for beginners.
3. Choose by Experience
Beginners
Start with delta kites or children's kites. Simple assembly, stable flight — even first-timers will succeed.
Some Experience
Eagle kites and animal-shaped kites require a bit more skill but offer better visual effects.
Advanced Flyers
Stunt kites and large kites require higher skill but deliver more excitement and challenge.
Benny Mak's Expert Advice
"I always recommend first-timers start with a delta kite or children's kite. These are easy to get in the air — and once you feel that success, you'll be hooked on kite flying. Then you can try other styles."
— Benny Mak, Founder of CS Kites
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How do I know if the wind is suitable?
A: Watch leaves and flags. If leaves are barely moving, it's good for light-wind kites. Leaves clearly swaying means medium wind. Branches moving means wind may be too strong.
Q: What accessories do I need?
A: Most kites include kite line. Just find an open space — a park, beach, or open field. Gloves are recommended for stronger winds.
