Best Kite Flying Spots in Hong Kong
Choosing the right location is key to a great kite flying experience. Based on nearly 40 years of experience, here are my top recommended spots in Hong Kong.
1. Tai Po Waterfront Park
Tai Po Waterfront Park is one of Hong Kong's most popular kite flying destinations. Wide open grassland and consistent sea breeze make it ideal for all types of kites. Families flock here on weekends — the atmosphere is wonderful.
2. Cheung Sha Beach
Cheung Sha Beach has stronger winds, making it suitable for more experienced flyers. The open space is great for large or stunt kites. Be mindful of safety — avoid flying near crowds.
3. Tai O
Tai O has a rich traditional culture atmosphere, perfect for flying traditional Chinese kites. The wind is steady and suits various kite types. Combined with the village's fishing heritage, it makes for a truly special outing.
4. Kwun Tong Waterfront Park
Kwun Tong Waterfront Park is very accessible for urban residents. While wind is lighter, it's great for children's kites and smaller models. Busier on weekends — try to visit during quieter hours.
⚠️ Safety Reminders
- Choose open areas away from trees, power lines, and buildings
- Be aware of people around you — avoid letting the kite line hit others
- Don't fly in excessively strong wind
- Children must be accompanied by adults
- Be careful when reeling in the line to avoid tangles
