Kite Festivals and Events in Hong Kong

Every time I hear about a kite festival or community flying event, I get excited. While Hong Kong's kite culture isn't as large-scale as Europe or Southeast Asia, community kite events have been growing in recent years — and more people are discovering the joy of kite flying.

Community Kite Flying Events in Hong Kong

Community centres, schools and NGOs in Hong Kong organise kite flying events regularly, especially in autumn and winter (October to March). Common event types include:

Community Family Kite Days

Organised by community centres, free or low-cost. Usually held at Tai Po Waterfront Park or Kwun Tong Waterfront. Great for families.

School Sports Day Kite Activities

Some schools include kite flying in their extracurricular programme, promoting outdoor teacher-student interaction.

Youth Uniformed Group Activities

Scouts and other youth groups often use kite flying as outdoor skills training.

Elderly Community Activities

Kite flying as gentle outdoor exercise — some elderly centres organise group outings.

Store Owner's Experience: A Community Kite Day

Last Sunday I joined a kite event organised by the local community centre at Tai Po Waterfront Park. About 20–30 families were there — parents, grandparents, and kids all flying kites together. I saw first-timers nervously letting out line, and then an old man skillfully flying an eagle kite incredibly high — quite the contrast, both funny and moving.

I hope to see more such events. Kite flying slows us down and makes us look up. In busy Hong Kong, that's especially precious.

Event Attendance Tips

  • Arrive early: Popular venues (especially Tai Mei Tuk) get crowded on weekends — aim for 8–9am
  • Come prepared: Bring enough water, sunscreen, and gloves for extended outdoor time
  • Choose the right kite: Match kite to wind conditions — don't fly light children's kites in strong winds
  • Keep safe distances: Ensure enough space between yourself and others to avoid line accidents
  • Check regulations: Some locations have flying restrictions — research before you go
