Best Kite Brands for Beginners

The first time I tried kite flying, my friend brought a cheap street market kite — and it simply wouldn't fly. That experience taught me: choosing the right beginner kite is the key to the entire experience. Here's what I've learned as a CS Kites customer over the years.

Why Delta Kites Are Best for Beginners

Based on CS Kites' sales data, delta kites are the most popular choice for beginners, for good reason:

  • Excellent stability — triangular structure keeps the kite balanced in the air
  • Flies in light wind — only needs Beaufort 2–3 wind; works in most HK outdoor spots
  • Easy assembly — typically 3–5 minutes, no tools needed
  • Single line — simple to control, no tangles for beginners
  • Affordable — entry models HK$40–80, includes line

Customer Stories

"I was a complete beginner. The owner at CS Kites recommended an xkites cartoon dinosaur delta kite — said it was the most stable. He even taught me how to let out the line. First trip to Tai Po and it flew perfectly! The cartoon design attracted so many curious passersby."

— Ah Fung, 25, Sha Tin resident, first kite experience

"I bought my daughter's first kite and had no idea what to get. Staff recommended a Colormax rainbow design — said it was ideal for kids being light and easy to control. My daughter got it into the air on her first try and screamed with excitement!"

— Mrs Yeung, Tseung Kwan O resident

"The most important thing for beginners is a successful first experience. If it won't fly, they lose interest. I always recommend delta kites or the xkites series first — they're designed for beginners. Almost guaranteed to fly if there's enough wind. Once it's in the air, you'll fall in love with kite flying!"

— Benny Mak, Founder of CS Kites

Beginner Tips

  • Choose open areas: Park grassland, seafront promenades, reservoir dams — avoid trees and power lines
  • Face the wind: Launch facing the direction the wind is coming from
  • Release line slowly: Don't let out too much at once — let the kite stabilise first, then gradually release more
  • Find the right tension: Too tight and the kite drops; too loose and it loses control — feel the pull
  • Pick the right day: Wind speed 10–30 km/h is ideal; check the HK Observatory forecast
